Bhakti Yoga & Imbolc:
Bhakti yoga is the path of devotion. The word ‘bhakti’ comes form the root bhaja which means to ‘adore, serve, love, to be devoted.’ The practices of bhakti yoga aim to channel the emotions and feelings towards a higher, sublime experience. Kirtan is one way we can practice bhakti yoga through joyful, rhythmic, devotional singing.
At Imbolc we see the first signs of Spring as the days begin to lengthen. Everywhere there are signs of the earth stirring. The serpent life-force is ready to be reborn. Now is the time to prepare inwardly for the changes to come. Plant your ideas and leave them to germinate in the fertile soil. Bring forth your visions and celebrate the Divine spark of inspiration and the potential to manifest. It is time to bring the wisdom we have gained during the winter months and bring it out into the active phase of the year.
‘When the mind is packed with the worries and troubles of a busy day, there is a particular yogic process which can transport your consciousness from dreary worldliness to sparkling bliss. It is so simple that everyone in the world can practise and enjoy it, whether a rickshaw walla or a managing director, young or old, rich or poor. That powerful electric process of transcendence from worldly troubles into the nectar of bhakti is called kirtan.’
Swami Nityabodhananda Saraswati
